Middle & High School Sailing

The Bay Access Sailing Foundation High School Sailing Program is hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club.  The Lakewood YC staff provides the coaching support with students sailing the Bay Access fleet of FJ sailboats. Sailors also participate in regattas organized by Bay Access & Lakewood Yacht Club as well as regional SEISA regattas.  The primary goal for this program is to introduce high school students to the sport of sailing and to teach them the fundamentals of small boat sailing & racing.  Sailors participate in double-handed, collegiate style sailboat racing at events held within the SEISA District. Teams with advanced sailors or complete teams will be encouraged compete in district and qualifying events for the ISSA Double Handed and Team Racing National Championships.  Please email:  sailingadmin@lakewoodyachtclub.com with any questions.

High School Varsity Multihanded Sailing

Age: 9th through 12th Grades

Class Description: The High School Varsity program is committed to the pursuit of high-level Regional and National competitions in Fleet Racing, Team Racing, Single-handed, and Triple-Handed events.  Skipper and crew combinations will change several times during the year as the coach sees the need. Sailors spend time learning and trying out each position while their coach will evaluate their individual abilities and ideal team placements.  We ask that parents share in our trust of the Lakewood Yacht Club Coaching Staff and support their decisions. The FJ is a fun, fast boat to sail which requires athleticism and balance. Training will include boat handling, boat speed, physics of sailing and weather, sail trim, one design tactics and strategy, video analysis and age-appropriate conditioning and fitness.  This team will be expected to travel to regattas and pursue regional and national competition. While we intend to have serious training we also strive for fantastic fun. Sailors in this class need to have the motivation to succeed, the desire to train, & the will to win.  Less-advanced sailors, those who may not be able to commit to the program full-time, and those learning a new position should sail in the JV Class.

*Coaching staff will approve members to join this team.  This is a varsity only team.  Please email sailingadmin@lakewoodyachtclub.com  if you have questions regarding which program is right for your sailor.

School Affiliation: Not needed for local regattas and program participation but required for regional competition or higher.
